APS AND AES SMALL LEARNING COMMUNITIES SPRING 2017

What Is A Small Learning Community?

  • A group of teachers consisting of grades first through fourth located on the APS/AES Campus
  • There will be a total of six Small Learning Communities (SLC)

 

Small Learning Communities Overview

  • First SLC was implemented last year as a Pilot Program known as School Within A School
  • All Communities are smaller entities of APS and AES.
  • State standards and curriculum aligned to standards will be followed by all SLC
  • By the end of 2018-2019 school year, all SLC will be in full implementation

 

Benefits and Impact on Students

  • An opportunity for students and parents to be familiar with teachers that are in the grade above that will lessen fears of beginning a new school year.
  • Transforms a large school environment into a smaller school environment
  • Get to know everyone on a more personal basis

Teacher Collaboration 

  • All teachers within the SLC will share common planning time
  • Vertical alignment of curriculum 
  • Discussion of students strengths and weaknesses and how to meet their needs
  • Project Based Learning, STEM, Hands On Learning, Real World Application

Student Collaboration

     Students within the SLC will help each other through:

  • Peer Support
  • Reading Buddies
  • Technology Partners
